Walk London Challenge with Transport for London
Transport for London and Go Jauntly are delighted to announce a brand new Walk London challenge running throughout May. You can sign-up for free on the Go Jauntly app. Get active and walk at least 20 mins a day in May.
Sometimes all you need are little daily reminders to treat yourself to a walk. Our brand new Walk London challenge has everything. Reminders + helpful tips + walk inspo!
We know that fitting exercise into your busy lifestyle is hard. Walking 20 minutes each day adds up to 140 minutes a week which is a great weekly target. It’s also very close to the NHS recommendation for adults to get at least 150 minutes of exercise per week.
Walking is fun, free and easy. It also helps you feel happier and healthier. To participate, all you need to do is sign up to the challenge and walk at least 20 mins a day throughout May. The more you walk, the more badges you unlock.
Why should you sign up?
When you walk, you benefit from those micro-moments of community connection which enhances your wellbeing. Say hello to a neighbour, smile at a stranger, stop and listen to the birdsong.
Walking is carbon and emission free, so it is good for London’s environment and it’s also good for you! That little nip to the shop, pharmacy, doctors or school are great for adding that extra movement into your life. Ditch the car for short trips and walk or cycle instead.
We all love the NHS and know it’s struggling right now from under-investment. The science shows that if every Londoner walked for 20 minutes each day, there would be £1.7bn savings to the NHS in treatment costs over 25 years.
When things feel mentally tough, go on a 20 minute walk. It can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. The science shows that 20-30% of cases of depression could be prevented by people treating themself to a walk. You deserve it!
Unfortunately 4 in 10 children in London are considered to be overweight or obese. It is one of the highest levels in England. Around 57kg of carbon could be saved per year if every young person in London walked instead of being driven one mile to school and back. You’d be there and back in 40 mins if you walked. Can you help get the steps up by ditching the car for the school run?
