We’re thrilled to launch 22 new walks along the beautiful coastline of Essex created in partnership with Essex County Council and the district councils of Castle Point, Chelmsford, Colchester, Maldon, Rochford, Tendring and West Mersea. Take on the challenge and walk them all!

The Essex coast has so much to offer, from birdwatching to historic tales, and from stunning architecture to incredible views. Best of all, walking is free and a great way to stay active and boost your mental wellbeing. All of the walks can be accessed via public transport and many of them have a reverse option too so you really will be spoilt for choice.

Castle Point

Canvey Wick to Canvey seafront
Beaches, industrial history and a peaceful nature reserve along the Thames estuary.
Can be walked in 2 hours 20 mins (6.9km).

Fancy starting at the nature reserve instead? This walk is for you!

Canvey Seafront - accessible route
A step free stroll along the beautiful seafront murals to Thorney Bay beach which has step free access. Can be walked in 20 mins (0.8km).

Chelmsford 

Woodham Fen to River Crouch
A tranquil scenic walk through a nature reserve and along the river, ending at a family friendly farm and park. Can be walked in 1 hour (4.1km).

Alternatively, you can walk this gorgeous route in reverse here.

South Woodham Ferrers Circular Walk

A relaxing walk around South Woodham Ferrers, with great views & lots of sea air. This circular route can be walked in 1 hour 50 minutes (7km).

Colchester

Colchester to Wivenhoe
Public artwork, stunning architecture and riverside views are ready to greet you.
Can be walked in 2 hours (7.3km).

West Mersea’s Old City Walk

Explore the history of West Mersea in this stroll through the Old City. Can be walked in 40 minutes (1.9km).

Follies Walk

Discover the ancient city, Parish Church and the coast on this walk around West Mersea. Can be walked in just 1 hour (3.8km).

St. Peter’s Meadow & The Boardwalk

Take in meadows, boardwalks and beaches on this walk around West Mersea. A stop at St. Peter’s Well Meadow is a must, as it’s one of England’s best wildlife sites. Can be walked in 5 minutes (2km).

Cudmore Grove World War Two Trail

Discover the World War Two history at East Mersea’s Cudmore Grove. This coastal artillery battery comes with gorgeous sea views, pillboxes and gun casemates. This route can be walked in just 35 minutes (1.5km).

The Dog & Pheasant Walk

This circular route takes you along East Mersea’s shoreline and through it’s coutryside too. Pubs, wildlife and epic views en route. This can be walked in 2 hours 15 minutes (5.1km).

Maldon 

Heybridge Basin & Goldhanger Walk

This long circular route takes in the sites of Heybridge Basin and Goldhanger. The gorund can be muddy and uneven in places, but the views definitly make up for the mud. This can be walked in just under 3 hours (13km).

Burnham and Creeksea
This jaunt is teeming with birdlife and lovely views of the saltmarshes with some great pubs en route.
Can be walked in 2 hours 30 mins (6.6km).

Rochford 

The River Roach Coastal Path
A peaceful, wildlife-filled stroll that winds along the river and through an old smuggling route.
Can be walked in 2 hours 30 mins (10.3km).

A shorter version of this walk is available too, which can be walked in 45 mins (3.2km).

Wallasea Island RSPB Reserve

A trail around the RSPB’s Wallasea Island Nature Reserve. Bird watching opportunities galore and the history of the HMS Beagle. This can be walked in 2 hours (5.3km).

Tendring

Walking The Naze
Enjoy the beautiful range of scenery and habitats on this headland while tapping into some local history as you go.
Can be walked in 2 hours (9km).

Have less time? No worries! We’ve got you with this slightly shorter loop which can be walked in 1 hour 30 mins (6.4km).

Clacton-on-Sea Heritage Trail
Resorting to the coast! Telling the story of Clacton’s unique seaside history.
Can be walked in 1 hour 30 mins (3km).

Frinton-on-Sea Heritage Trail
Complete with fab architecture, wartime history and lovely beaches, a walk around Frinton is a walk through time.
Can be walked in 1 hour 30 mins (3.5km).
